Nvidia's new GeForce RTX cards include a VirtualLink connector. This is a new standard designed for next-generation virtual reality (VR) headsets.

This standard is developed by a team of VR headset players including Nvidia, AMD, Microsoft, and Oculus to meet the needs of power, display data and other bandwidth requirements of next-generation VR headsets. The port looks like USB Type-C port because it is - VirtualLink is based on USB-C and offers high bandwidth over a single port. The ultimate aim is, as you may have guessed, simplify the bulky tethers of current VR headsets.

The new VirtualLink connector offers four high-speed HBR3 DisplayPort lanes, a USB 3.1 data channel for onboard cameras, and up to 27 watts of power. Those HBR3 DisplayPort lanes are said to be "scalable for future needs". The standard is developed to reduce latency and optimized for demands of the next-gen headsets.
