If you don't bother installing 3rd party file managers, you at least need to know some keyboard shorcuts of File Explorer. For example you can just press Ctrl + Shift + N to create a new folder, instead of going through context menus with mouse.

Win + E

Open File Explorer (global shortcut)

Alt + D

Select the address bar

Ctrl + E

Select the search box

or Ctrl + F
Ctrl + N

Open a new window

Ctrl + W

Close the current window

Ctrl + ↑   Shift + E

Display all folders above the selected folder

Ctrl + ↑   Shift + N

Create a new folder

Ctrl + mouse scroll wheel: Change the size and appearance of file and folder icons

Display all sub-folders under the selected folder


Display the contents of the selected folder


Collapse the selected folder

Alt + P

Display the preview pane

Alt + ⤶ Enter

Open the Properties dialog box for the selected item

Alt +

View the next folder

Alt +

View the folder that the folder was in (One level up)

Alt +

View the previous folder

or ⬅ Backspace

Display the current selection (if it’s collapsed), or select the first sub-folder

Collapse the current selection (if it’s expanded), or select the folder that the folder was in


Display the bottom of the active window


Display the top of the active window


Maximize or minimize the active window
